Winter Hiking

Mom was visiting this weekend, and so on Saturday we went for a hike in the same park Rob and I went to before, and tried a different trail. This one was much more scenic, especially with all the snow that fell last week.

There are little Inukshuks here and there along the trail. If you add a stone to it it brings good luck. This one was very well hidden!

The view from one of the higher points of the trail. It was so quiet when we stopped hiking, because of the snow, that we could hear the bird fly. It was so beautiful and eerie.

The stairs we came down on on our previous hike.

This is what they call a "marmite" (a cauldron). They were formed thousands of years ago, when this area was under ice. They are the result of underwater volcanic activity. The trail is named after them, but this is the only one we saw.

More beautiful scenery. Doesn't this put you in a Christmas mood? Or at least make you like winter?

Rob's manic tendencies took over when he found some giant icicles...

There was still about an hour of light left when we finished the Marmites trail, and we had told mom so much about the trail with the suspended bridge, that we decided to hike up to the bridge and back really quickly. Remember when I took this picture in the fall and all the trees were yellow?

We couldn't hike up to the bridge and not go on it, so we did. It was much less scary the second time, and at least this time there is a picture of me on it!

I've decided I really like hiking. This trail was even more beautiful than the previous one (the snow helped, this is really more of a pine-tree-and-snow landscape than a fall landscape) and it was also more natural; the other one had a lot of stairs built on it. Rob and I are tentatively planning to go back next weekend, depending on the weather.
